County announces Martin Luther King Day closings

MECKLENBURG COUNTY - Mecklenburg County government offices and agencies will be closed on Monday, Jan. 17, 2011 in observance of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

This includes all units of the Department of Social Services, the Tax Office, Elections Office, the Register of Deeds Office and Land Use and Environmental Services.

More property revaluation meetings set; snow date rescheduled

MECKLENBURG COUNTY - More public meetings concerning Mecklenburg County property revaluation have been announced, and a meeting postponed by icy weather has been rescheduled.

Revaluation is the process of reappraisal of all properties within the County for tax assessment purposes, and is required once at least every eight years by North Carolina law. The last reappraisal in Mecklenburg County was in 2003.

Over time, the real estate market changes, and market prices deviate from the assessed values estimated during the previous reappraisal. A revaluation does two important things:

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools to operate on two-hour delay Thursday

MECKLENBURG COUNTY - For the first time ever, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is operating on a two-hour delay.

The delay is a transportation option that will affect students. Schools will open two hours late; the ending school times do not change.  All employees will report to work at the usual time.

Bus drivers should report to work in enough time to prepare the buses properly in order to start the bus route on a two-hour delay.

MECKLENBURG COUNTY - Due to icy road conditions that still exist in many Charlotte neighborhoods, the City of Charlotte Solid Waste Services has suspended garbage and recycling collection services for the remainder of Wednesday.

Beginning Thursday, if weather permits, garbage and recycling collection services will resume. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday customers should leave their garbage and recycling carts curbside until all collections are completed.

Firefighters discover marijuana plants growing inside burning house

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Police have confirmed that firefighters found marijuana plants growing inside a burning house early Tuesday morning.

The fire was reported around 12:30 a.m. in the Oakhurst Community at 5315 Lantana Avenue.

According to the police report, authorities found a marijuana growing operation with an estimated street value of $5,000.

Charlotte firefighters rescued two victims from the home and they were taken to the hospital.  We do not know the extent of their injuries.

Officials say the fire was accidental.

Charlotte schools close for third day in a row

MECKLENBURG COUNTY - Due to the continued icy conditions on residential streets in Mecklenburg County from Monday's storm, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School district announced that it will close for students the third day in a row on Wednesday.

The district says that teachers and staff will operate on a two-hour delay. CMS employees should note that this is a CODE A: Optional Teacher Workday.

MECKLENBURG COUNTY - Garbage and recycling pickup is canceled for Tuesday, January 11. Weather permitting, regular service will resume on Wednesday, January 12. Monday and Tuesday customers should leave their garbage and recycling carts curbside until all collections are completed by Saturday, January 15.  

Yard waste and bulky item pickup is suspended until Tuesday, January 18. Residents with bulky item collection scheduled for this week are advised to call 311 (704.336.7600) after their scheduled collection date to reschedule for next week.
