The Guild of Charlotte Artists is hosting an Alcohol Inks Demo this week.

Visitors can enjoy a demonstration by Aly and Alex of Cheap Joe's Art Stuff, on creating art with alcohol inks.

The combination of ink and the slick surface of the Yupo paper yields a loss of control, lending to loose, beautiful works which tantalize the eye.

Interested artists should meet at the Mint Museum Randolph, located at 2730 Randolph Road in Charlotte, Wednesday March 27, at 7 p.m.

Admission is free and open to the public. Materials for audience participation are included.

The Latin American Coalition is presenting the first film of its CineMas series.

The series offers screenings in each of the four seasons, starting with El Regreso (The Return).

In this visual journey, a 30-year-old man returns to his home country of Costa Rica for a short visit after a decade of living in New York.

When events force him to stay longer than expected, the trip becomes an encounter with the past he left behind: a violent country, friends he doesn't recognize and a family in crisis.

Movie-goers can catch the screening at the Mint Museum Randolph, located at 2730 Randolph Road in Charlotte, Thursday March 14, at 7 p.m.

Admission is $5 and open to ages 13 and up.

For more information on the screening, call 704-941-6735.

Classroom app creates pitch perfect music

Classroom app creates pitch perfect music

Gone are the days when Orchestra Director Bill Myers needs a tape recorder to listen to a student’s pitch. In his classes at Hough High School, Myers uses a new form of technology – the SmartMusic App which changes the way students practice and learn their instruments.

The interactive tool allows students to play along with the music onscreen and provides immediate feedback on their performance. Myers uses the app to grade 50 percent of the student’s assignment while his trained ear provides the other half.

The House of Education Committee is working to pass House Bill 127 that students have arts education credit for graduation beginning with the freshmen class of 2016.
